Cardinals bump Wellemeyer to bullpen (AP)

The St. Louis Cardinals are sending struggling Todd Wellemeyer to the bullpen. Wellemeyer is 7-9 with a 5.79 ERA. He threw a bullpen session Tuesday and manager Tony La Russa said Wellemeyer will be available for relief duty on Thursday. The Cardinals plan to recall righty Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis to take Wellemeyer's turn against Houston on Friday night.

Rangers' Padilla out due to swine flu (AP)

Texas Rangers pitcher Vicente Padilla is still weak from the swine flu and has been scratched from Tuesday night's start against the Detroit Tigers. The Rangers made the announcement 3 1/2 hours before gametime. Padilla was diagnosed with the illness last week and missed a start against Boston. The team thought he'd recovered and was ready to return to the rotation.

Dice-K's public comments irk Red Sox (AP)

Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona said the club is disappointed that sidelined pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka went public with his concerns on how the team is handling his training techniques. Matsuzaka was 1-5 with an 8.23 ERA before going on the 15-day disabled list June 21 with a mild strained right shoulder.

Padres activate C Blanco, INF Eckstein (AP)

The San Diego Padres activated catcher Henry Blanco and infielder David Eckstein off the disabled list before the second game of their series against the Reds. Blanco and Eckstein have been sidelined since early July with strained hamstrings. Both were in the starting lineup Tuesday against Cincinnati.

BoSox send Kotsay to ChiSox for Anderson (AP)

The Boston Red Sox have traded outfielder Mark Kotsay and cash to the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Brian Anderson. Both teams were in second place in their divisions when they made the deal Tuesday. The 33-year-old Kotsay hit .257 with one home run and five RBIs in 27 games for Boston this season.

Blue Jays owner seeks to control costs (AP)

The company that owns the Toronto Blue Jays says it needs to control costs. CEO Nadir Mohamed said Tuesday on a conference call discussing Rogers Communications' quarterly earnings that the company remains committed to the Blue Jays. Alfonso Soriano was able to stand and watch this time. The Cubs slugger redeemed himself for an earlier mental miscue by hitting a game-ending grand slam in the 13th inning to lead Chicago past the Houston Astros 5-1 on Monday night. "I never thought about it, to hit a grand slam," Soriano said.
