Wang has season-ending shoulder surgery (AP)

Yankees starting pitcher Chien-Ming Wang has had season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his injured right shoulder. Noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure Wednesday to repair what Yankees manager Joe Girardi said was a tear in the capsule. The team is awaiting reports from the surgery before setting a potential timetable for Wang's return next year.

Cubs score 6 in 1st, rip Astros 12-0 (AP)

Randy Wells pitched eight shutout innings and Alfonso Soriano hit a three-run homer during a six-run first inning Wednesday, leading the Chicago Cubs to an 12-0 victory over the Houston Astros. Aramis Ramirez homered and drove in two runs for the Cubs, who battered Mike Hampton and improved to 10-3 since the All-Star break.

Orioles place LHP Hill on 15-day DL (AP)

Orioles left-hander Rich Hill has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with what the team termed "shoulder inflammation," but the pitcher contends he's had a torn labrum since the beginning of the season. Hill is 3-3 with a 7.80 ERA in 14 games this season. He didn't blame his poor ERA entirely on the shoulder injury, but contended Wednesday that it wasn't easy pitching…

Phillies acquire LHP Lee from Indians (AP)

Looking for a top starter to bolster their so-so rotation, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee from the Indians. The defending World Series champions are sending Cleveland four minor league prospects for Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco, a baseball official familiar with the trade told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

In a statement early Wednesday, July 29, 2009, the Astros said the symptoms are similar to those of an appendicitis.

Houston Astros reliever Wesley Wright was out of the hospital Wednesday after being treated the previous night for dehydration. Wright had to take the mound in the second inning of Houston's 11-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs after Astros ace Roy Oswalt hurt his lower back. Oswalt on Wednesday returned to Houston, where he was to be examined by a back specialist.

M’s get SS Wilson, RHP Snell from Bucs (AP)

The Seattle Mariners have acquired shortstop Jack Wilson and pitcher Ian Snell from the Pittsburgh Pirates for shortstop Ronny Cedeno, Triple-A catcher Jeff Clement and three minor league pitchers. Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik says he made Wednesday's trade to get the 31-year-old Wilson.

Phillies make offer for Indians LHP Lee (AP)
