Hours after he was linked to a positive drug test, David Ortiz hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox rallied to beat the Oakland Athletics 8-5 on Thursday. With two runners aboard, Ortiz hit a two-out pitch from Craig Breslow (4-5) to right-center, giving Boston a 6-5 lead.

Zumaya to have season-ending surgery (AP)

Detroit Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya is scheduled to have season-ending shoulder surgery in August. Zumaya, who has had shoulder problems since an offseason injury in late 2007, last pitched on July 18 against the New York Yankees. He was then placed on the 15-day disabled list. Orioles to trade Sherrill to Dodgers (AP)

Looking to add a big arm to their bullpen, the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers reached an agreement Thursday to acquire former All-Star closer George Sherrill from the Baltimore Orioles. The rebuilding Orioles would receive third baseman Josh Bell and right-hander Steve Johnson, both of whom were at Double-A Chattanooga.

Arizona pitcher Brandon Webb has had another setback with his ailing right shoulder, raising the possibility the Diamondbacks ace may need surgery. Webb missed the team's trip to New York and instead will visit Dr. Keith Meister of the Texas Rangers in Dallas, Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes said Thursday.

Boston Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka says he never complained about the way Red Sox made him train. Matsuzaka released a statement Thursday saying he spoke with manager Terry Francona and he's resumed his training "in a good state of mind." Matsuzaka had been quoted as saying the team's throwing program was keeping him from pitching like he had in Japan.

Trevor Hoffman's locker is barely there — stuck way in the back of the Brewers clubhouse, near a hallway to the training rooms and showers and across from fellow old-timer Craig Counsell. Baseball's all-time saves leader has just a one-year deal with Milwaukee, and nobody knows how long his run with the Brewers will last.
