Reds acquire 3B Rolen from Blue Jays (AP)

Looking for leadership and a right-handed hitter, the Cincinnati Reds got Scott Rolen from the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday in a swap of third basemen. Third baseman Edwin Encarnacion was part of a package of three players the Reds gave up to acquire Rolen, who is batting .320 with eight homers and 43 RBIs.

BoSox deal LaRoche for Braves’ Kotchman (AP)

The Boston Red Sox traded recently acquired Adam LaRoche to the Atlanta Braves for Casey Kotchman in a swap of first basemen on Friday. LaRoche, who played in Atlanta from 2004-06, was traded for the second time this month. He was dealt from Pittsburgh to Boston for two minor leaguers on July 22. White Sox get RHP Peavy from Padres (AP)

Jake Peavy has finally agreed to pitch for the Chicago White Sox. The San Diego Padres traded their ace to the White Sox on Friday shortly before the deadline for making deals without waivers. The Padres got four young pitchers for Peavy — Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Dexter Carter and Adam Russell.

Yankees get versatile Hairston from Reds (AP)

The New York Yankees acquired infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. from the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, giving them a versatile player who has appeared at six positions this season. The Reds received minor league catcher Chase Weems in the deal. Hairston confirmed he was traded before the Reds' scheduled game against the Colorado Rockies.

Braves deal LaRoche for BoSox’s Kotchman (AP)

Adam LaRoche is headed back to the Atlanta Braves, and Casey Kotchman is returning to the American League. In an exchange of first basemen, the Braves sent LaRoche to the Boston Red Sox for Kotchman and cash before Friday's 4 p.m. deadline to make trades without waivers. LaRoche, who played in Atlanta from 2004-06, was traded for the second time this month.

Red Sox acquire C Martinez from Indians (AP)

The Boston Red Sox got the big bat they were looking for, acquiring All-Star slugger Victor Martinez from the Cleveland Indians on Friday. The Indians received right-hander Justin Masterson and minor league pitchers Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price. The trade came shortly before the 4 p.m. EDT deadline to complete deals without waivers.

Rookie pitcher Brad Bergesen has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Baltimore Orioles, who activated right-hander Chris Ray from the DL and recalled reliever Kam Mickolio from Triple-A Norfolk. Bergesen bruised his left leg when hit by a line drive Thursday against Kansas City. He is 7-5 with a 3.43 ERA in 19 starts.

The deal was completed hours before baseball's non-waiver deadline. The 31-year-old Vargas was 0-0 with a 1.64 ERA in eight games for the NL West-leading Dodgers.

Indians’ Carmona to start against Tigers (AP)

Fausto Carmona is back pitching for the Cleveland Indians. Sent to the lower minor leagues earlier this season to work on his mechanics, Carmona, a 19-game winner in 2007, was recalled from Triple-A Columbus to start Friday's series opener against the first-place Detroit Tigers. The Indians also brought up outfielder Trevor Crowe.
