The Cincinnati Reds' third baseman is out indefinitely with concussion-related symptoms after being beaned by the Cubs' Jason Marquis, and is unlikely to play during a three-game series against…

Capps hits Pujols, ejected as Cards win (AP)

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Zach Duke(notes) cools down in the dugout after being pulled in the eighth inning of a baseball game against the St. Louis Cardinals in Pittsburgh Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009.

Skip Schumaker's first career pinch-hit home run started a five-run eighth-inning rally for St. Louis that included Pirates pitcher Matt Capps' ejection for hitting Albert Pujols, and the Cardinals finished off a three-game sweep by winning 7-3 Sunday. The Pirates lost a 3-2 lead in the eighth while dropping their eighth in a row, all at home.

St. Louis right-hander Brad Thompson will appeal a three-game suspension for pitching inside to the Mets' David Wright, a punishment Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called unfair. The Los Angeles Dodgers bunched nine hits off Chris Carpenter. Not much to show for it against the stingy Cardinals ace, though. Carpenter got the key outs and relied on a defense that turned four double plays to wrap up an undefeated month, and Brendan Ryan matched a career high with four hits in a 6-1 victory on Monday night.
