Carpenter wins seventh straight decision (AP)

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter(notes) pitches in the first inning against the Cincinnati Reds in a baseball game, Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009 in St. Louis. Carpenter collected his seventh win in a row, striking out 10 in seven innings of work as the Cardinals beat the Reds 5-2.

Reds place 3B Rolen on 15-day DL (AP)

The Cincinnati Reds put newly acquired third baseman Scott Rolen on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after his concussion-related symptoms did not lessen. Rolen was not arguing the move made before Tuesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals, agreeing that it was the right thing for him and for the franchise.

Cardinals put RHP Wellemeyer on DL (AP)

Cardinals pitcher Todd Wellemeyer has been put on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow. St. Louis made the move Tuesday, a day after Wellemeyer was scratched from a scheduled return to the rotation. He has been told to rest the elbow for five days. The Cardinals recalled rookie right-hander Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis to start against the Cincinnati Reds.

Aaron Harang had been hearing it from family members and friends, a constant reminder as the losses piled up over the past two months. They should leave him be now. Harang ended the worst winless stretch of his career with his first victory since late May, Brandon Phillips and Adam Rosales each homered and the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on Sunday.

Molina, Zito help Giants beat Reds 4-2 (AP)

Bengie Molina homered among his three hits and drove in three runs and Barry Zito pitched six strong innings, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 on Saturday. Eugenio Velez also connected as the Giants won their fifth in seven games. Fred Lewis added two hits. Zito (8-10) gave up two runs and three hits over six innings to win his third straight decision.

Reds end skid at 8, defeat Cubs 4-0 (AP)

Scott Rolen returned from a beaning that left him sore and blurry for two days, then hit a two-run homer on his first swing Wednesday night to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs that ended their eight-game losing streak. Right-hander Justin Lehr (1-0) limited the Cubs to four hits in his first complete game.

Cubs activate Miles, Soto returns Friday (AP)

Infielder Aaron Miles was activated Wednesday by the Chicago Cubs, who are about to get their starting catcher back, too. Miles had been on the disabled list since June 29 with an injured elbow. He was back in the starting lineup at shortstop for the final game of a series against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Chicago Cubs have activated infielder Aaron Miles off the 15-day disabled list in time for the final game of their series against the Cincinnati Reds. Reliever Jeff Stevens was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday to open a roster spot. The right-hander had no record and a 2.84 ERA in five games with the Cubs.
