Padres recall RHP Carrillo to make start (AP)

The San Diego Padres have called up right-hander Cesar Carrillo to make his first major league start against the Milwaukee Brewers. Carrillo started Thursday. To make room for him, the Padres sent right-hander Mike Ekstrom to Triple-A Portland. Carrillo was a first-round draft pick of the Padres in 2005, but needed elbow reconstruction surgery in 2007 and missed part of last season.

Cubs option Samardzija after poor start (AP)

Jeff Samardzija, hit hard in his first major league start a night earlier for the Cubs, has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Chicago also recalled right-hander Justin Berg from Iowa on Thursday. Samardzija is 1-2 with a 7.81 ERA in 17 appearances with the Cubs this season. He lasted 3 1-3 innings Wednesday night in a 12-5 loss to the Phillies, allowing seven runs and eight hits.

The San Francisco Giants have reinstated pitcher Joe Martinez from the disabled list and optioned reliever Waldis Joaquin to Triple-A Fresno. Martinez (1-0, 6.75 ERA) was to make his first major league start Wednesday against the Astros. He was hit in the head by a line drive by Milwaukee's Mike Cameron on April 9.

Umpire West works 4,000th game (AP)

Umpire Joe West worked his 4,000th game Thursday when the Washington Nationals played the Milwaukee Brewers, the 14th man in the majors to do so. West worked his first major league game in 1976 when he was 23 and later was out of the game for two years in a contract dispute with baseball. He says he was fortunate to work so much before he came up to the majors to help accelerate his career.

Sore forearm sidelines Twins LHP Liriano (AP)

Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano was scratched from Wednesday's start with soreness and swelling in his left forearm.
