Off DL, Meche helps Royals beat Twins (AP)

Gil Meche was victorious in his return from the disabled list and the Kansas City Royals dealt the Minnesota Twins a major setback in the AL Central with a 5-4 series-clinching victory Thursday. Meche (5-9) gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings of his first start since July 11, and the Royals took two of three for their first series win since a trip to Houston on June 23-25.

The Kansas City Royals have activated right-hander Gil Meche from the 15-day disabled list to start Thursday's game against the Minnesota Twins. Meche was placed on the disabled list July 18 with a lower back strain. He was 4-9 with a 4.50 ERA in his first 19 starts of the season. Kansas City's opening day starter is making his first start since July 11.

Crawford, Aybar lead Rays over Royals (AP)

Zack Greinke could appreciate the game Carl Crawford had against him. Crawford had three hits, three RBIs and stole his 49th base of the season, leading the Tampa Bay Rays past the Kansas City Royals 10-4 on Monday. The Rays' All-Star left fielder went 3 for 3 against Greinke (10-7) after having just one hit in 16 previous at-bats against him.

Royals end Shields’ no-hit bid, top Rays (AP)

John Buck ended James Shields' bid for a no-hitter with a leadoff single in the eighth inning, Mitch Maier drove in three runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Sunday. Royals designate Ponson for assignment (AP)

Kansas City Royals right-hander Sidney Ponson has been designated for assignment. Royals manager Trey Hillman made the announcement before Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. Ponson went 1-7 with a 7.36 ERA in 14 games, including nine starts, this season. Kansas City plans to bring up right-hander Kyle Davies from Triple-A Omaha to start Wednesday's game with Seattle.

Rookie Jeff Niemann pitched eight dominant innings for his 10th win, Carl Crawford hit a two-run homer and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Saturday. Niemann (10-5) gave up four hits and struck out seven in his second career start against the Royals. He threw a two-hitter in beating Kansas City 9-0 on June 3.

Royals acquire OF Anderson from Tigers (AP)

The Kansas City Royals have acquired outfielder Josh Anderson from the Detroit Tigers for cash. The trade was announced Thursday before Kansas City played the finale of a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles. The 26-year-old Anderson hit .242 with 16 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 74 games with Detroit this year.
