The San Diego Padres have called up right-hander Cesar Carrillo to make his first major league start against the Milwaukee Brewers. Carrillo started Thursday. To make room for him, the Padres sent right-hander Mike Ekstrom to Triple-A Portland. Carrillo was a first-round draft pick of the Padres in 2005, but needed elbow reconstruction surgery in 2007 and missed part of last season.

Brewers send Hardy to minors, drop Hall (AP)
The slumping Milwaukee Brewers sent former All-Star shortstop J.J. Hardy to the minors Wednesday, designated third baseman Bill Hall for assignment and fired their pitching coach. The shakeup will give top prospect, Alcides Escobar, a chance to show he's the shortstop of the future and a potential leadoff man the club sorely lacks.

Adrian Gonzalez had a career-high six hits and the San Diego Padres had their best offensive output of the season in beating the struggling Milwaukee Brewers 13-6 on Tuesday night. Gonzalez paced the 22-hit attack as the Padres had at least two hits in every inning except the fourth when they were retired in order.

Brewers acquire RHP Weathers from Reds (AP)
The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired Cincinnati right-hander David Weathers for a player to be named later. Weathers is 3-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 43 games. He pitched one inning and got the win in Friday's 10-5 comeback win over the San Francisco Giants. The 39-year-old reliever starts his second stint with Milwaukee.

Brewers purchase contract of RHP Colome (AP)
The Milwaukee Brewers purchased the contract of right-handed reliever Jesus Colome from Triple-A Nashville and designated left-hander R.J. Swindle for assignment on Friday. The Brewers acquired the 31-year-old Colome after he was designated for assignment by Washington on July 4. Colome was 1-1 with an 8.40 ERA in 16 appearances for the Nationals this season.
