Gil Meche was victorious in his return from the disabled list and the Kansas City Royals dealt the Minnesota Twins a major setback in the AL Central with a 5-4 series-clinching victory Thursday. Meche (5-9) gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings of his first start since July 11, and the Royals took two of three for their first series win since a trip to Houston on June 23-25.

Royals activate, start RHP Meche (AP)
The Kansas City Royals have activated right-hander Gil Meche from the 15-day disabled list to start Thursday's game against the Minnesota Twins. Meche was placed on the disabled list July 18 with a lower back strain. He was 4-9 with a 4.50 ERA in his first 19 starts of the season. Kansas City's opening day starter is making his first start since July 11.

Polanco helps Tigers defeat Twins 8-7 (AP)
The Detroit Tigers know there's a lot of baseball left this season and they're far from wrapping up the AL Central. Their latest win, however, on a sweltering Sunday was especially sweet. Placido Polanco hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning and Detroit held on for an 8-7 win over the Minnesota Twins.
Pavano stifles Tigers in Twins debut (AP)
The Minnesota Twins got just what they needed from Carl Pavano and the usual from Denard Span and Joe Mauer. He allowed only five hits over seven innings in his Minnesota debut, Span went 5-for-5 and Mauer homered and drove in three runs to lift the Twins to a 11-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night.

Twins acquire RHP Pavano from Indians (AP)
The Minnesota Twins have acquired right-hander Carl Pavano from the Cleveland Indians in an attempt to shore up their rotation. The deal was announced Friday. The Twins will send the Indians a player to be identified later. The 33-year-old Pavano went 9-8 with a 5.37 ERA in 21 starts for Cleveland this season, giving up 150 hits and 23 walks with 88 strikeouts in 125-plus innings.

Tigers rookie Porcello earns 10th win (AP)
Brandon Inge hit a two-run homer in a four-run second inning and Rick Porcello didn't give up a hit until the fifth, helping the Detroit Tigers coast to a 7-3 win against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. The Tigers won three of four games in the series to stay atop the AL Central, heading into a matchup with the third-place Minnesota Twins.

Rookie Trevor Crowe hit a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning, helping the Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1 Thursday. Twins’ Slowey has surgery on right wrist (AP)
Minnesota Twins pitcher Kevin Slowey is out of surgery, and his right wrist is expected to be OK for spring training. Slowey had a bone chip removed Tuesday. His wrist will require two to four months of rehabilitation and recovery. The 25-year-old Slowey is 10-3. The Twins are in the middle of the AL Central race.

Morales’ 2 HRs, 6 RBIs help Angels sweep (AP)
Take away Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrero, and the Los Angeles Angels still have one potent offense. Kendry Morales hit two three-run homers to finish with a career-high six RBIs and the Angels beat the Minnesota Twins 13-4 on Sunday to sweep their three-game series. Los Angeles has won 13 of 15 to improve to an AL-best 63-40 on the year, and Morales is a big reason why.
