Cubs apologize to Victorino for shower (AP)

The chairman of the Chicago Cubs apologized in person to Philadelphia star Shane Victorino on Thursday, a day after the center fielder was showered with beer at Wrigley Field. A man in the bleachers threw a cup of beer on Victorino as he was catching a fly ball in the Phillies' 12-5 win Wednesday night.

Cubs option Samardzija after poor start (AP)

Jeff Samardzija, hit hard in his first major league start a night earlier for the Cubs, has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Chicago also recalled right-hander Justin Berg from Iowa on Thursday. Samardzija is 1-2 with a 7.81 ERA in 17 appearances with the Cubs this season. He lasted 3 1-3 innings Wednesday night in a 12-5 loss to the Phillies, allowing seven runs and eight hits.

Pedro to start Wednesday against Cubs (AP)

Pedro Martinez will make his return to the majors Wednesday when he starts for Philadelphia against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said Monday that the three-time Cy Young winner will come off the 15-day disabled list. He finished up last season with the New York Mets.

Happ to stay in Phillies’ rotation (AP)

J.A. Happ isn't going to the bullpen to make room for Pedro Martinez. "Happ's not going anywhere," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Thursday. "He deserves to stay in the rotation. He's pitched very well. He's probably been our most effective starter." Happ tossed a four-hitter against Colorado and struck out 10 for his second career shutout Wednesday night.

Lincecum wins 12th, Giants top Phils 2-0 (AP)

San Francisco Giants' Tim Lincecum(notes) reacts after getting Philadelphia Phillies' Raul Ibanez(notes) to fly out for the third out of the ninth inning of a baseball game in San Francisco, Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009. The Giants won, 2-0. Lincecum was the winning pitcher.

Tim Lincecum won his 12th game blanking the Phillies for eight innings and San Francisco beat Philadelphia 2-0 on Saturday night. Lincecum struck out eight and leads the majors with 191. On Monday, he struck out 15 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Brian Wilson pitched the ninth for his 27th save in 31 opportunities and gave the Giants a major league-leading 14th shutout.
