Padres recall RHP Carrillo to make start (AP)

The San Diego Padres have called up right-hander Cesar Carrillo to make his first major league start against the Milwaukee Brewers. Carrillo started Thursday. To make room for him, the Padres sent right-hander Mike Ekstrom to Triple-A Portland. Carrillo was a first-round draft pick of the Padres in 2005, but needed elbow reconstruction surgery in 2007 and missed part of last season.

Adrian Gonzalez had a career-high six hits and the San Diego Padres had their best offensive output of the season in beating the struggling Milwaukee Brewers 13-6 on Tuesday night. Gonzalez paced the 22-hit attack as the Padres had at least two hits in every inning except the fourth when they were retired in order.

Johan Santana threw eight strong innings and tied his career high with two hits and an RBI as the New York Mets avoided a four-game sweep with a 5-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Santana (13-8) tied for the major league lead in wins as he held the Padres to one run on five hits as New York won for only the third time in 11 games.

Yanks activate Gaudin, start A-Rod at DH (AP)

The New York Yankees activated right-hander Chad Gaudin before Sunday night's game against the Boston Red Sox, giving them an extra arm in the bullpen and someone who could make a spot start if necessary. The Yankees acquired Gaudin from the San Diego Padres last week for cash or a player to be named later.

Padres win on Cabrera's slam off K-Rod (AP)

Rookie Everth Cabrera hit a grand slam in the ninth inning off closer Francisco Rodriguez to give the San Diego Padres a 6-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night. Cabrera, who struck out three times, connected on a 3-2 pitch from Rodriguez (2-3) into the right-field stands to give the Padres their 11th win over New York in 14 games.

Padres extend manager Black through 2010 (AP)

The San Diego Padres extended manager Bud Black's contract through the 2010 season. The Padres will have a club option for 2011. Terms of the deal were not announced Thursday night. Black, who was named manager in November 2006, has a record of 196-238 with San Diego, which is in last place in the NL West with a 44-65 record entering its game against the New York Mets.

Yankees acquire RHP Gaudin from Padres (AP)

The New York Yankees have acquired pitcher Chad Gaudin from the San Diego Padres for a player to be named. The Yankees announced the trade during Thursday night's game against Boston. The 26-year-old right-hander is 4-10 with a 5.13 ERA in 20 games for the Padres, including 19 starts. Gaudin did especially well in late July, giving up three earned runs or less in five straight starts.

Padres release RHP Prior (AP)

The San Diego Padres have released right-hander Mark Prior, whose once-promising career has been interrupted by two shoulder surgeries since April 2007. Prior had signed a minor league contract with the Padres in January. General manager Kevin Towers said the Padres didn't see enough progress with Prior's rehab to believe he could help the big league club this season.
