Jackson pitches into 9th, Tigers top O's (AP)

Edwin Jackson took a shutout into the ninth inning, Magglio Ordonez homered and the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 Wednesday night. Jackson (8-5) allowed two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out eight. He has allowed two runs in 16 innings over two starts against Baltimore this season.

Cubs' Wells posts fourth straight win (AP)

Chicago Cubs' Derrek Lee(notes) hits a double off Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aaron Harang(notes) to drive in a run in the eighth inning of a baseball game, Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, in Cincinnati. Chicago won the game 4-2.

If not for a rookie pitcher, the Chicago Cubs wouldn't be where they are today: First place by a percentage point. Rookie right-hander Randy Wells took a shutout into the eighth inning Monday night, and Mike Fontenot hit a three-run homer off slumping Aaron Harang, leading the Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Lincecum wins 12th, Giants top Phils 2-0 (AP)

Tim Lincecum won his 12th game blanking the Phillies for eight innings and San Francisco beat Philadelphia 2-0 on Saturday night. Lincecum struck out eight and leads the majors with 191. On Monday, he struck out 15 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Brian Wilson pitched the ninth for his 27th save in 31 opportunities and gave the Giants a major league-leading 14th shutout.
