Off DL, Meche helps Royals beat Twins (AP)

Gil Meche was victorious in his return from the disabled list and the Kansas City Royals dealt the Minnesota Twins a major setback in the AL Central with a 5-4 series-clinching victory Thursday. Meche (5-9) gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings of his first start since July 11, and the Royals took two of three for their first series win since a trip to Houston on June 23-25.

Never in Mariners history had one run taken so long — and felt so good. Pinch-hitter Ken Griffey Jr. lined a single off the right-field wall with two outs in the bottom of the 14th to give the Mariners a 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night and end the longest scoreless game in Seattle's 33-year history.

Hunter Pence hit a pair of three-run homers for a career-high six RBIs, powering the Houston Astros to a 14-6 victory over the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night. Pence's home runs highlighted a five-run first inning and a seven-run fourth that chased Ricky Nolasco (8-8). Florida had won five in a row.
