Adam LaRoche gave the Braves the lead with a seventh-inning homer, his second of the game, and Atlanta continued its second-half surge by beating the Washington Nationals 6-2 on Wednesday night. Nationals awaiting word on Zimmermann (AP)

Nationals acting general manager Mike Rizzo says rookie right-hander Jordan Zimmermann probably needs reconstructive elbow surgery.

The Washington Nationals are still waiting for a final diagnosis on rookie pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, who likely will need major elbow surgery. Dr. Lewis Yocum, an expert in Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, is supposed to examine Zimmermann's MRI exam on Tuesday. The Nationals already have said they expect the worst, and only went to Yocum to provide to confirm the diagnosis.

Braves INF Infante comes off DL, starts (AP)

The Braves have activated infielder Omar Infante from the disabled list and put him in the starting lineup for the opener of a two-game series against the Washington Nationals. Infante had been out since May 20 with a broken left hand, the result of being hit by a pitch. He had a similar injury in 2008.

Bad as could be for long stretches this season, the last-place Washington Nationals suddenly are the best team in baseball. Really? Best in baseball? Well, yes, they are at the moment: The Nationals enter their game at the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday with eight consecutive victories, the longest active streak in the majors.

Surging Nationals win eighth straight (AP)

Elijah Dukes drove in three runs, Ryan Zimmerman had three hits and the surprising Washington Nationals won their eighth straight with a 9-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. The Nationals' eight-game run is the second longest in their five seasons in the nation's capital. They won 10 straight from June 2-12, 2005.

Andrews to examine RHP Zimmermann’s MRI (AP)

The Washington Nationals have asked renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews to look at the MRI of right-hander Jordan Zimmermann's sore elbow. Zimmerman, who's been on the disabled list with the injury since July 19, had the exam Friday and the Nationals didn't like what they saw. They sent the results to Andrews on Saturday.

Mets get INF Hernandez from Nationals (AP)

The Mets acquired infielder Anderson Hernandez from the Washington Nationals for minor league infielder Greg Veloz. The 26-year-old Hernandez had stints with the Mets each of the previous four seasons. He was dealt to the Nationals last Aug. 20 to complete a trade in which New York acquired pitcher Luis Ayala.
