Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino filed a police report Thursday, a day after getting doused with beer while making a catch at Wrigley Field. Cubs apologize to Victorino for shower (AP)

The chairman of the Chicago Cubs apologized in person to Philadelphia star Shane Victorino on Thursday, a day after the center fielder was showered with beer at Wrigley Field. A man in the bleachers threw a cup of beer on Victorino as he was catching a fly ball in the Phillies' 12-5 win Wednesday night.

Cubs option Samardzija after poor start (AP)

Jeff Samardzija, hit hard in his first major league start a night earlier for the Cubs, has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Chicago also recalled right-hander Justin Berg from Iowa on Thursday. Samardzija is 1-2 with a 7.81 ERA in 17 appearances with the Cubs this season. He lasted 3 1-3 innings Wednesday night in a 12-5 loss to the Phillies, allowing seven runs and eight hits.

Never in Mariners history had one run taken so long — and felt so good. Pinch-hitter Ken Griffey Jr. lined a single off the right-field wall with two outs in the bottom of the 14th to give the Mariners a 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night and end the longest scoreless game in Seattle's 33-year history.

Ubaldo Jimenez pitched three-hit ball for eight innings and Carlos Gonzalez homered early, sending the Colorado Rockies over the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-0 Wednesday night. Jimenez (10-9) won his fourth straight decision. He became the fourth member of the Rockies' rotation with double-digit victories, joining Jason Marquis, Aaron Cook and Jorge De La Rosa.

Hunter Pence hit a pair of three-run homers for a career-high six RBIs, powering the Houston Astros to a 14-6 victory over the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night. Josh Beckett pitched seven strong innings for his major league-high 14th win, Mike Lowell and Jason Bay homered and the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-2 Wednesday night. The Red Sox won their third in a row and sent AL Central-leading Detroit to its fourth loss in five games. Boston has won seven straight against the Tigers.

Hunter (5-2) gave up six hits and struck out five without a walk over a career-high 7 2-3 innings as the Rangers bounced back from a 5-0 loss to Cleveland on Tuesday with their league-leading eighth shutout.
